No trauma caused by photos

Reading about amateur photographer Malcolm Dike's brush with the law brought a memory back from nearly 40 years ago.

Mr Dike, you may recall, made the news last week when he revealed how the police came calling at his Gloucestershire home because the sunset he was photographing was in the general direction of a youth club.

The police were satisfied he meant no harm but Mr Dike is understandably aggrieved they even felt the need to check.

Then it hit me. In about 1970, someone I'd never met won an amateur photography prize with a picture of me fishing beside a lake. My parents saw it in a national newspaper and knew it was me because my fishing brolly had a distinctive rip in it and they recognised the shoe on the left sticking out from beneath it.

You couldn't see my face, but replica breitling if you looked hard you could just get a glimpse of an eight-year-old boy's knee; which, I imagine, is terribly exciting for some people.

Now I'm wondering if this wasn't actually a case of abuse and, if I can find the snapper, whether or not I could sue him for the post- photographic stress disorder I now feel I must have suffered for the past four decades.

When I think about it, every little wrong turn in my life could be down to the sense of violation caused by that picture. That time I was too shy to ask out a girl; my fear of spiders; my failure to become Prime Minister; my craving for
embroidered patches pasties; my hair going grey.

I am a wreck, but half a million quid would sort it.

While we are at it, why did my parents not call the police and have the snapper put on a register for the rest of his life? That's negligence and they will be hearing from my solicitors. Another half million, by way of setting an example to others, would be the least I could expect.
