The two women pictured together entered an unnamed Cardiff shop just after New Year, before electrical and DIY goods were bought with stolen cheques.

Witnesses said the taller person in the dark jacket was in her early 30s and may be a transvestite. The shorter woman in the cream jumper appeared to be in her late 20s or early 30s. Both are also thought to live in the Cardiff area.

The cheque book had been inside a handbag taken from an office in the Rumney area of the city before Christmas. The bag also contained a considerable amount of jewellery with a high sentimental value and the owner is keen to have it back.

The lone woman pictured is thought to have stolen a handbag from the staff room of a shop in Bridgend town centre, before heading to an electrical store in Cardiff. Goods there were later found to have been bought with the cheques.

Witnesses in the shop described the dark-haired woman as a Cher lookalike in her late 20s or early 30s. She was captured on CCTV cameras, and officers believe she lives in Cardiff.

Detective Constable Terry Stevens, of the stolen cheque unit, said: ``We believe she may be responsible for stealing and using other cheque books as well, so we are eager to find out the identity of this lady.

``These women have done thousands of pounds
