talking WM sense

Byline: lydia

Until the recent snow, my trainers hadn't been used in a long, long time. I like them, but they're so old the velcro pops open (usually when I've had a big dinner - I'm sure my feet, along with everything else, expands in enjoyment) and the grips on the bottom are frankly risible.

And I'm not sure how these grips have worn away, because I've not needed to wear them to exercise in ages, unless they've actually disintegrated with age or in protest at being neglected.

I choose heels over trainers every time and rarely encounter a vertiginous shoe I don't like.

I'm a bit prone to toppling in my usual choice of vertigo-inducing heels, and because of this have been christened Bambi by my friends, with whom it's become 'You in another comedy fall shocker? Say it can't be!' I give my heels such a hammering that they're on constant rotation at Spencer's cobblers in Penarth (where absolutely no job is too much trouble).

And as I collect one pair of shoes, I'm dropping off another for them to work their magic.

They even top up unsightly scuffs for you, for goodness sake, and ensure every shoe looks as good as new.

But last week's flurry of snow had me collecting my crusty trainers from my parents' house and slip-sliding into work in daps with an even funnier walk than usual, because I'm so unaccustomed to wearing them now.

Speaking to our experts on the page opposite has had me thinking that I should be being more active and could do with giving my trainers more airings or even investing in a pair of sturdy walking boots.

Of course I've known this for ages.

But their advice shows just how easy it can be to eat and gently exercise to create a stronger, more healthy and resilient you; to give yourself a general MOT.

I've been christened Bambi for Not meaning to sound nauseatingly preachy, but it's not groundbreaking to hear that little changes are the way forward, and there's no need to run marathons or diet to the bone when there are such an abundance of simple and age-old ways at hand to strengthen and guard yourself.

toppling over in my high heels I'm often fit to bursting with irrational jealousy for chicks who get their kicks from a jog around the park and being outdoorsy.

Because, for me, it's always a bit of a bind and an effort to go running.

But we went for a lovely, blustery ramble on Sunday, which blasted away the cobwebs and the slight, muggy hangover and, quite surprisingly, gave me enormous satisfaction.

I may try combining the upcoming spate of friends' birthday dinners with getting moving a bit more and being more sensible with my dinner choices.

But if I'm really honest, it's more likely to really kick in once the celebrations are done and dusted.

Well, I'll try if you will.
